Trump 'generally' supports ending chokeholds for police
US President Donald Trump has said the controversial chokehold method for restraining some suspects should "generally speaking" be ended. Some US police forces have moved to ban chokeholds since the outbreak of anti-racism protests sparked by the death of George Floyd, an African American. Mr Floyd died after a white officer knelt on his neck for nine minutes. Mr Trump said it would be a "very good thing" to ban chokeholds but they may still be needed in some situations. The president's comments come with Democrats and Republicans in the US Congress trying to hammer out the details of a police reform bill - the proposed Justice in Policing Act of 2020. Brazil overtakes UK with world's second-highest Covid-19 death toll
Brazil has overtaken Britain as the country with the world’s second-highest Covid-19 death toll after a further 843 deaths pushed its total to 41,901. The tally was published on Friday night by a coalition of news outlets which has been compiling independent statistics since Brazil’s health ministry was accused of seeking to conceal the full figures last week. Brazil condemned to historic tragedy by Bolsonaro's virus response – top doctor According to the British government 41,481 lives have been lost in the UK since late January although the number rises to more than 50,000 when suspected cases are included. Brazil’s death toll is also considered an underestimate. Only in the US, where the official death toll stands at more than 116,000, have more died. Formula 1 2020: Japan, Singapore and Azerbaijan races cancelled
The Japanese, Singapore and Azerbaijan Grands Prix have been cancelled because of the coronavirus pandemic. Formula 1 has tried to find a way to hold the races in 2020 but announced on Friday that was not possible in the uncertain global situation. The historic event at Suzuka is off as a result of Japan's ban on many international travellers. Races in Singapore and Baku cannot be held because the street circuits cannot be built in the current climate. The cancellations mean F1 has lost a further three key grands prix to the Covid-19 crisis that has already claimed the season-opening race in Australia and the blue-riband Monaco event. Japan and Singapore are two of the most prestigious and popular races on the calendar. Suzuka resonates with drivers and fans alike as perhaps the most challenging of all tracks, while Singapore's night event is not only a physical and mental test of endurance because of the hot, humid and bumpy conditions and length of the race, but is also popular with corporate visitors. All football games in Spain will be played without fans, and authorities will try to stop supporters from gathering outside stadiums. Only a few journalists will be allowed inside to cover the matches. Joris Evers, Chief Communications Officer at La Liga, explained to Euronews how canned cheering will be used to give the games more oomph. "On the international broadcast, anybody who's watching La Liga outside of Spain, you will have a virtual stand. There'll be an audio a soundtrack that is actually based on the EA Sports FIFA product, which uses real sound from real fans from real matches," he said in a TV interview. Portuguese superstar Cristiano Ronaldo has become the first footballer to earn more than $1 billion (€885m), according to Forbes magazine. The Juventus player ranked fourth on the publication's 2020 Celebrity 100 list after earning $105 million (€92.9m) before taxes and fees in the past year. He beat arch-rival Lionel Messi by one spot with the Argentinian netting $104 million (€92.1m) Ronaldo, 35, is not the first athlete to cross the $1 billion threshold while still active — golfer Tiger Woods and boxer Floyd Mayweather beat him to it — but he is the first to reach it in a team sport. His prowess on the field during his 17-year professional career has so far earned him $650 million (€575.8m) which will have grown to $765 million (€677.7m) by the time his current contract with the Italian team expires in 2022. The rest of his income has come from "leveraging his celebrity", Forbes said. He's had a lifetime deal with Nike since 2016 which has so far paid him $20 million (€17.7m) a year, and he also has deals with Clear shampoo, Herbalife and pharmaceutical maker Abbott. He also has his own trademark — CR7 — which includes branded underwear, a line of shoes, fragrances and denim wear. It is estimated to account for a quarter of his annual endorsement income. The father-of-four is also the most followed athlete on social media with more than 200 million followers on Instagram. His popularity is also profitable to clubs. Sony's 'daring' PS5 design, new Spider-Man game and everything else we learned
Today Sony's finally revealed the PlayStation 5 in full. It showcased a fresh white design alongside a new suite of games that includes the return of familiar characters interspersed with entirely new titles, some of which looked dazzling. The games were shown alongside the new look for the device, which is tall and thin and colored white on its front and back, with blue light and black accent colors on its sides. The company said it will reveal a price and launch date for the PS5 later. The company also said there will be a discless "all digital" version, which had been reported about since 2012. Sony is also calling in its friendly neighborhood Spider-Man to help launch its next generation PlayStation 5 video game console later this year. Spider-Man: Miles Morales will launch alongside its new PS5 console in time for the holiday shopping season, Sony said. The game will focus on Morales, a mixed-race character at the center of the hit 2019 movie, Spider-Man: Into the Spider-verse. The announcement was part of an event Sony held on June 11 to discuss the new titles. Riot Games executive resigns after 'abhorrent' George Floyd post
A gaming firm executive has resigned over a meme he posted about George Floyd, who died while being arrested. Ron Johnson, who was head of consumer products at Riot Games, shared an image detailing Mr Floyd's criminal record. He wrote that it was "no reason to condone his killing" but added: "This type of criminal lifestyle never results in good things." Riot Games said the Facebook post was "abhorrent" and told staff Mr Johnson had exercised "poor judgment". The Los Angeles-based firm produces the hugely popular League Of Legends video game and the newly released shooter Valorant. On 5 June, the company pledged to donate $1m (£790,000) to "accelerate progress" against racism, amid protests following the death of Mr Floyd. Zuckerberg's Former Aide Chris Cox Returns to Facebook as Product Head
Facebook's former chief product officer, Chris Cox, is returning to his role, according to his post on the social media platform. Cox left Facebook in March last year after Chief Executive Officer Mark Zuckerberg revealed a plan to transform the world's biggest social network into an encryption-focused messaging company. Zuckerberg shared Cox's Facebook post on Thursday, adding "I'm really excited Chris is coming back to Facebook!". Wall Street stages recovery after heavy losses on Thursday
US shares ender higher on Friday as buyers stepped in following sharp losses earlier in the day. At the closing bell, the Dow Jones was 1.9% up, while the S&P 500 rose 1.3% and the Nasdaq gained 1%, buoyed by a positive US consumer confidence survey. But, after big falls on Thursday, the three indexes still saw their biggest weekly percentage fall since mid March. In Europe on Friday, London's FTSE 100 rose 1.74%, while France's Cac 40 was up almost 2% and Germany's Dax 1.25%. Thursday's torrid trading left the Dow down 7% and Europe 5% lower. Thursday's sell-off was prompted by a bleak view of the US economy from its central bank, the Federal Reserve, and reports of rising coronavirus cases from some US states. On Friday, data from the University of Michigan showed a surprisingly big jump in confidence among consumers. Markets remain volatile as investors struggle to assess the economic damage of coronavirus. Bank of England 'ready to act' as economy shrinks record 20%
Bank of England governor Andrew Bailey has said he will be "ready to take action" to help the UK economy weather the coronavirus crisis. He was speaking after figures showed that the country's economy shrank by 20.4% in April - the largest monthly contraction on record - as the country spent its first full month in lockdown. "We are still very much in the midst of this," Mr Bailey said. But he said the figure was "pretty much in line" with what the bank expected. "Obviously it's a dramatic and big number, but actually it's not a surprising number," he said. The Office for National Statistics (ONS) said April's "historic" fall affected virtually all areas of activity, as large parts of the economy remained shut to battle the pandemic. >>Read more

IMF Says $10 Trillion spent to combat pandemic. Far more needed.
Governments around the world have spent $10 trillion in fiscal actions to respond to the novel coronavirus pandemic and its economic fallout, but significant further efforts are needed, the head of the International Monetary Fund said on Thursday.
