Music note durations

Each music note that is written on a stave has a certain time it stays held or is played for, it is the look of the note that tells musicians how long to play it for, its fairly similar to how musicians can read where the note is on a stave and then can play it.

NOTE : There are more note lengths, just for the sake of this tutorial I will be explaining the 5 most common durations. It is also based off the time signature 4/4 - Read about time signatures

Whole Note - SemiBreve

A whole note is the most common longest note that is in use in music in general day. It is a open note and has no stems unlike the other notes, it looks like an oval.

Duration of a whole note is - 4 Quarter notes (4 Crotchets)

Half Note - Minim

It is like a whole note because the oval is not blacked out, but it has a stem the little line going off the oval.

Duration of a half note is - 2 Quarter notes (2 Crotchets)

Quarter Note - Crotchet

A very famous note, this is the most common way to represent 1 beat. This is very famous because the most common time signature that is used is 4/4 meaning that this is always a quarter note and is used in alot of pop melodies.

Eight Note (Quaver)

Yes it is spelt like the crisp Quavers, but dont get it confused with that (I hope you wont) The eight note is 1/2 of a quaver and it is commonly used in popular melodies aswell, it is common that instead of a quaver on its own you will see it 'beamed' together to another eight note or another note with a beam. Like so

Sixteenth note (Semi-Quaver)

A sixteenth note is 1/4 of an crotchet note (Quarter note), it is also worth 1/2 of a Quaver it is also commonly beamed together with other semi quarter notes. Like so :

That is all I have time to write today, but I will post another thread detailing rhythm trees soon!
