Compared with MKV, the videos formats AVI, MOV, MP4 are more compatible with PC, MAC and portable devices and can be played by VLC more simply. Therefore, it's better to convert MKV to those more common video formats to play MKV with VLC while avoiding sound and subtitle problems.
I don't think converting is the solution of this problem. I mean these days so many video files comes in MKV format. So converting all of them to any other format is not an easy task. Plus converting big media files is very time consuming process. So it can take lots of your time.
For me I never face any kind of problem in playing MKV format videos in my laptop and desktop computer. They are working quite smoothly. So I guess instead of converting better to try another way for playing those files directly.
