Well, I think any responsible pet owner should immunise their pet or at least check for ticks. Last thing you want is getting a disease from your dog or have your dog die because you were a careless owner.

Some of the more dangerous diseases though, like Toxo which causes deformities to the embryo if a pregnant lady is infected via pets, is much harder to detect and you need to draw blood to run those tests. Other things like Leismania infections can be prevented by both vaccination as well as keeping away from marshes during summer.

I think the worst thing is fillariosis, which might not be easily contractible to humans but it kills dogs really quick. It' what we call a heart worm and it kills mostly puppies. Imagine getting a puppy and have it die a week later because it was never vaccinated or treated for fillaria.
