Now compare that to now.  Fake violence. 

Society as a whole wants to completely get rid of violence and crime, and video games contribute (however little) to that factor. Not making violent videogames readily available to minors, violence in reality will most definitely decrease, though doubtfully a large amount. There is no actual 'need' to play violent video games, so I have no objection to reducing their availability to minors.
