I am in the process of evaluating what to buy for my next computer because this one I am using at home is already antiquated with its Windows XP and core duo processor. I am torn between a laptop with portability and the desktop with its stability. My concern with the laptop is the portability that I can use it almost anywhere particularly when I am on the road or abroad. But the desktop has the convenience of the big monitor and the stability of the programs not to mention the durability.

What is your opinion on this?

Hello Alexandroy, I would recommend you buy a desktop because of its durability and stability of the programs that you mentioned. Although Laptop would give you the portability and the ease of working from any one, it still is a bit cumbersome and one thing I do not like about laptops is that it gets heated up and becomes uncomfortable. But with desktop, there is no problem and although I have to sit in one place, I can make sure my posture is correct and thus, not cause any back and neck problems.

With laptop, one tends to become too casual and sloppy and our posture suffers a great deal. So if you buy desktop versus laptop, you have this added benefit.

To solve the problem of portability, you can buy a tablet and use it only when you are away from home and switch back to desktop when home.

Between desktop and laptop, what you need to by depends on your requirements. If you are looking for portability, you should consider laptop. If you are looking for durability, you should consider buying desktop. If your work requires you to travel frequently and you need to work on computer, laptop is must.

I prefer having a laptop computer to a desktop one. I am somebody who loves having my gadgets around so that if I want to watch a movie I do it easily. Having a desktop computer is not bad. In fact they are known to be longer lasting than the laptop ones but the major disadvantage is it's not portable. If you want to carry your office with you then buy a laptop computer but if you do not want work with you everywhere then a desktop is the way to go.

Actually its totally depend on your requirement. If you travelling lot then laptop is the best option as portable computer. Desktop computers are more stable and durable in compare to laptop. So its up to you. If you are computer usage is limited to home then I will suggest you to go for Desktop computer otherwise laptop will be better choice.

Heh, this used to be my job, recommending computers.

Honestly, it all depends on what you need and want out of a machine, and even then there's really no one-size-fits-all recommendation that can be made. It should just come down to if you need to have your work portable or stationary, and what tech you already have that can help with that. either way.

I think it is one of the hottest topics ever discussed in almost all technology forums. In fact the answer lies in your requirement; I mean why you want a computer or laptop. If you are an exclusive home user and do not travel much, a desktop would be handy. A desktop is easy to upgrade and more user-friendly than a laptop. But it lacks portability. So, if your job demands traveling a desktop will be of no use to you. A laptop is compact and you can use it on the go. With the advent of internet dongles laptop is really a mobile office. But laptop is costlier than desktop.

Thank you for your reactions to this thread. It looks like the voting is fairly even so I'm back to square one on this dilemma. My wife is pushing for a laptop and she is willing to shoulder the excess cost (over the price of the desktop). Now I am inclined to follow her wishes. But my worry is the validity of my old programs particularly the video editor and the midi composer (for musical compositions). Someone in the house suggested that I retain the old desktop and use the new laptop as my home base for computer works since I can bring it to the office and to anywhere I wish.

But that laptop is not yet final though.
