If you already have a desktop then consider buying a laptop. Nowadays portable devices are the best. Consider that you may want to work while travelling. It's portability has been related to general pc weight when we talk about convenience. Travelling with a laptop may help one to avoid travelling with heavy backups. There is also no need of travelling with long cables. Remember that you can use a laptop to take photos and record videos whenever your camera or your smartphone is off. Consider my suggestions but still you are the one to decide.

My wife is pushing for a laptop and she is willing to shoulder the excess cost (over the price of the desktop). Now I am inclined to follow her wishes. But my worry is the validity of my old programs particularly the video editor and the midi composer (for musical compositions). Someone in the house suggested that I retain the old desktop and use the new laptop as my home base for computer works since I can bring it to the office and to anywhere I wish.
But that laptop is not yet final though.
Well, in that case you first need to confirm that you are purchasing new laptop. And if it is possible for you to keep both of them then it is well and good. By that way you can use both computers for different purpose, one for home and other for your office work. If your desktop computer is in good shape then you can keep it till your applications validity.

It basically depends upon your requirement. I use a laptop because I give importance to portability. I do not want stop my job when I am away from home. Though desktop has an edge over laptop on cost, maintenance and durability, I still prefer laptop because it serves my purpose to my satisfaction.

If I were you I would have gone for a laptop since I already got a desktop with me provided I have enough fund with me. As fund is not an issue, I think you can better consider buying a laptop which could be used in your office too. Nowadays laptops which are as good and durable as desktops are also available. Portability definitely give an edge to laptops over desktops.

If I want a portable computer, I will go for tablets. My vote for this poll would be a desktop. Desktops can handle more hours of usage than laptops and if your desktop's keyboard gets broken, It is easy to buy a replacement. When a laptop's keyboard gets broken, You going to make a repairman few dollars richer. Desktop is also better for gaming. Any laptop will crash and ends up in BSOD if you play Sims 3 on it.

And you are also correct about costing of parts as laptop's part like keyboard and display are quite costly. And I have also noticed that DVD drive don't work correctly for that long in compare to desktop computer. For me my desktop is having low configuration than my laptop but still my desktop works more efficiently in compare to my laptop.

I would definitely choose a laptop. I think the portability is just too big a quality to pass up, I mean you can work from anywhere, but I guess the importance of this depends on your lifestyle. In addition to the portability, you can actually find some good laptops that are quite stable and can handle many of the features that originally only desktops could, although this also depends on how much you are willing to spend.

You are right that laptop got a number demerits when compared to desktop like overheating, difficulty in repairing, sometimes not easy to upgrade, not a game friendly machine (mostly), keyboard issues, high cost etc. But one of the distinct advantages of laptop is its portability. As OP would also like to use it in office, I think laptop would be the only viable option. My first laptop (IBM ThinkPad) lasted for around ten years without any major issues. It all depends on how you use it. If you are a traveling kind of person, a desktop would be of no use to you. I use my laptop with a USB keyboard attached to it.

Personally, I prefer laptop when I work at home, actually, we do not have enough space at home to use a desktop computer. I use a desktop computer at my work office since it is very comfortable to use and also I have enough space to locate it on my work office table.
One advantage of a desktop computer for me is that I can locate its case wherever I wish. At this time, I have located the case under my work office table. I am interested in finding out which one is more environmentally friendly, desktop computer or laptop? Do you have any information on this? Is that totally based on the type of computer technology either laptop or desktop? I greatly appreciate it to inform me if you have enough instruction convincing on this subject. :shy:
