Evil, is known as the antagonist of good, in a religious instance, God is “good” and Satan is “bad.” The evil, I assume that everybody knows that it is, yet, people never think to reflect on the importance of evil characters both in real life and fiction (Religion).
What is evil? Evil goes hand in hand with cruelty. A simplistic example of “evil.”
Example # 1 Nazi scientists used to turn Jews into bars of soap, turned Jews into lampshade (these are facts) they also subjected a person, to 3 hours under frozen water. These experiments made some medical breakthroughs.
These are examples considered by many to be evil; even I consider that to be cruel and inhumane. We are all aware of the projects and experiments conducted by the Nazi scientists. They didn't just kill Jews they experimented on them. Where do we find evil in the current time? Robbing and Murder are evil to the majority of the spectators; I do not consider murder, wrong or even evil. If that was the case, then we should consider all animals’ evil. Then again, murder is usually planned and premeditated but, it is simple action none the less. In the dark ages of Christianity the inquisitions were planned murders and we didn't consider it evil, these definitions change as time goes, evil is no different.
A very old argument I used in my previous topics, is that the definition of evil is influenced by history. If Hitler would have won his reality would have become truth and the Jews would be the ones depicted as evil, and rotten. That would have changed the history text books most of you carry. We then would be used to the idea that Hitler wasn't evil and he was merely doing a service to humanity but, that is not the case. I cannot picture how different things would be if he was victorious.
The important role of Evil
In a real scenario, if the “hero” didn't have an opposition the “villain” most if not all of his heroic drive would not exist, society would die of lethargy. A force cannot exist without an opposition. Example, the “hero” would not exist because he wouldn’t have a chance to “prove” himself to be good.
In a fictional scenario, if Satan wasn't there to poke at God’s face, religion wouldn’t continue. Take Satan away from Christianity, hell disappears, sins disappear (since he is all the root of evil), punishment disappears, and then God disappears. The belief in God would die because, Satan is what makes Christianity, Islam, and Judaism thrive. What would you have to fear if Satan wasn't there? What would be the point of torturing yourself in abstinence and leading a fun less life if there is no hell? No punishment -->No scare tactic --> No Religion.
Evil, makes good thrive, it makes religion thrive.
Excuse my horrible grammar, I am pretty tired and just decided to type some thoughts.
