Quote:A commercial jet carrying 116 people crashed shortly after takeoff early Thursday morning in Mali, according to news reports.
Air Algerie Flight AH5017 disappeared from radar only 50 minutes after it had taken off from Ouagadougou, the capital of Brukina Faso, at 1:17 a.m. local time. It was supposed to land in Algiers, Algeria, at 5:11 a.m.
About 21 minutes after takeoff, pilots had requested to change their route due to heavy rains on the current flight path, according to Burkina Faso’s Transport Minister Jean Bertin Ouedraogo.
Mali’s President Ibrahim Boubacar Keita said the flight’s wreckage had been discovered in the west African country’s desert, Reuters reported.
“I have just been informed that the wreckage has been found between Aguelhoc and Kidal,” Keita said during a meeting.
The Ouagadougou airport’s Facebook page said one of the passengers is LGBT rights activist Mariela Castro, a niece of the Cuban leader, but those rumors were deemed to be false, according to the Telegraph.
The Air Algerie flight had 51 French nationals on board.
“I can confirm that it has crashed,” an Algerian official told Reuters, declining to be identified or give any details about what had happened to the aircraft on its way north.
Swiftair, the private Spanish company that owns the plane, confirmed it had lost contact with the MD-83 operated by Air Algerie, which it said was carrying 110 passengers and six crew.
A diplomat in the Malian capital Bamako said that the north of the country – which lies on the plane’s likely flight path – was struck by a powerful sandstorm overnight.
Whatever the cause, another plane crash is likely to add to nerves in the industry after a Malaysia Airlines plane was downed over Ukraine last week, a TransAsia Airways crashed off Taiwan during a thunderstorm on Wednesday and airlines cancelled flights into Tel Aviv due to the conflict in Gaza.

I know, right. I won't be flying for a good while. That's like one plane a month now.

Wouldn't be surprised if sales for flights plummet to the ground either haha!
