Gambling as a form of diversion and relaxation

I used to gamble by betting on horse racing. It was lots of fun especially when I am winning. But honestly, I am not for gambling and I only bet on the horses to make it more exciting to watch the races. And that winning part is just a bonus. My bet on horses is minimal, just like spending for a movie ticket. What I do was to go to the betting station early and place all my bets so I can be in the comfort of our home to watch the races on tv.

But on the contrary, I have so many friends in the horse racing industry who became poor because they are heavy bettors. They are what we can call chronic gamblers who bet not for the enjoyment but for the winning. And what if they lose? They would be betting more until they lose their food allowance. For me, I have stopped betting some few years ago because I had no spare time to spend.

I have never liked doing things that depend on luck. Gambling is one such activity which I will not touch. I prefer to participate in activities which I have control, at least partially. There is a saying in Chinese which directly translates to "9 losses in 10 gambles" and I think it is so true.
